Early in 2017 Horace was commissioned to create an original piece of work for Dr Martens. It had to be 8’ x 4’ as it was to hang in the stairwell of their new store in Camden which opened in March 2017. Mission accomplished, it inspired him to create some new works based on the classic DM boots (one of his own pairs in fact). He has worn DM’s for the past 40 years and even has a pair featuring one of his cassette art works, created by DM especially for him - an identical pair was auctioned for The Joe Strummer Foundation. Dr Martens means more to him than that though; he was brought up in Kettering where the original DM factory was and, as a teenager, he worked for a while in their leather processing plant before leaving the town for art school. He says “walking past the DM factory all you could smell was this awful acrid smell of raw leather and tanning agents but even back then I loved them as working boots with steel caps… later, I wore them as part of The Specials’ two-tone mod look. I love how they have evolved with colour and pattern while remaining an iconic British brand”. As an aficionado of Pop Art, he has saturated them with colour while adhering to the mantra of ‘elevating the mundane’. These prints work both individually or as a triptych and are limited to an edition of 100.
